Caesarea was originally called Stratton’s tower after its founder Stratton, who was a ruler of Sidon during the 4th Century BCE. Herod built Caesarea into the grandest city other than Jerusalem over the course of 12 years and renamed this city “Caesarea” in honor of the emperor.
